Windshield & Chip Repair
Answers to the most common questions about windshield replacement and rock chip repair.
Most windshield replacements are completed in 60–90 minutes. We use DOW and Sika-certified urethane adhesives that reach drive-away strength in about one hour, so you're typically back on the road the same morning you came in. Walk-ins are welcome.
Most chips smaller than a quarter — bullseyes, stars, and partial cracks — can be repaired in 30 minutes or less with no appointment required. If the chip is in the driver's direct line of sight, longer than 6 inches, or has spread into a crack, replacement is the safer call. We'll give you an honest assessment on the spot at no charge.
We stock OEM-equivalent glass from trusted brands including PGW, Carlite, FYG, Carlex, and Pilkington — the same manufacturers that supply original equipment. For vehicles under dealer warranty or with specific OEM requirements, we can source factory glass as well. Every replacement comes with our lifetime workmanship warranty.
A1 Auto Glass offers a lifetime workmanship warranty on all windshield installations. If the install ever leaks, rattles, or fails due to workmanship, we fix it at no charge — no expiration date. The glass itself is covered by the manufacturer's warranty against defects.
With our DOW and Sika-certified adhesives, drive-away time is approximately 1 hour under normal conditions. We'll let you know the exact safe drive-away time for your vehicle's specific adhesive cure before you leave. Do not go through a car wash or slam doors hard for 24 hours after installation.
Insurance & Coverage
How insurance works for auto glass claims, and what you need to bring in.
Yes — if you have comprehensive coverage, windshield replacement is typically covered with no out-of-pocket cost and no impact to your rates. California law prohibits insurers from raising premiums for a single comprehensive glass claim. We bill GEICO, State Farm, Progressive, AAA, Farmers, Allstate, and most other major carriers directly — you just sign the paperwork.
Rock chip repair starts at $35.99 for the first chip. If you have comprehensive coverage with no deductible on glass, rock chip repair is typically $0 through insurance. We'll check your coverage on the spot and handle the claim paperwork while you wait.
No — we handle the claim for you. Bring your insurance card and a photo ID and we'll initiate the claim directly with your insurer. You do not need a pre-authorization or a claim number before arriving. We'll confirm your coverage and get your written approval before any work begins.
Absolutely. In California, you have the legal right to choose any licensed auto glass shop regardless of what your insurance company recommends. Insurers may suggest a preferred shop, but they cannot require you to use it. We work with every major carrier and have been doing direct insurance billing since 2001.
California law prohibits insurance companies from surcharging or canceling your policy for a single comprehensive glass claim. Filing a windshield or chip repair claim under comprehensive coverage will not raise your rates and does not count as an at-fault accident. If you're unsure, we're happy to review your policy summary with you before filing.
Window Tinting
Everything you need to know before choosing a tint film and shade.
California law requires front side windows to allow at least 70% of light in (VLT). Rear side windows and the rear windshield can be any darkness if the vehicle has dual side mirrors. The windshield may only have a tint strip along the top 4 inches. We only install legal tint configurations and will advise you on the darkest legal shade for your specific vehicle.
Regular dyed film blocks light but not much heat. Ceramic tint blocks up to 99% of UV and significantly more infrared heat without interfering with GPS, phone signals, or TPMS sensors. Nano-ceramic film takes it further — thinner layers, better clarity, and superior heat rejection. We carry the full Llumar lineup and will walk you through the real-world differences without upsell pressure.
A full vehicle tint typically takes 2–4 hours depending on the number of windows and any complex curves. EVs and vehicles with large panoramic sunroofs may take slightly longer. We schedule appointments to minimize your wait time. Most customers drop off in the morning and pick up by early afternoon.
Yes. All Llumar ceramic and nano-ceramic films installed by A1 come with a lifetime manufacturer warranty covering bubbling, peeling, color change, and delamination. Our installation workmanship is also backed by a lifetime warranty. If anything goes wrong with the film or the install, we make it right.
Do not roll your windows down for 3–5 days after installation to allow the film to fully cure. Avoid cleaning the interior surface for the first week. After curing, clean with a soft microfiber cloth and an ammonia-free cleaner. Do not use paper towels or abrasive cleaners. We'll give you a full care sheet when you pick up your vehicle.
ADAS, Mobile & General
Questions about camera recalibration, mobile service, and general shop policies.
If your vehicle has a forward-facing camera mounted to the windshield — which most 2016 and newer vehicles do — yes. The camera must be recalibrated any time the windshield is replaced to ensure lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control function correctly. California law requires ADAS recalibration after windshield replacement on equipped vehicles. We perform in-house static calibration with Autel-certified equipment on most makes and models.
We calibrate ADAS systems on most domestic and import vehicles including Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Kia, Tesla, and more using Autel-certified tooling. Some vehicles with dynamic calibration requirements may need a short drive cycle post-install. We'll confirm your vehicle's calibration requirements when you call or bring it in.
Yes. We offer mobile windshield replacement throughout San Diego County within a 50-mile radius of El Cajon. Our mobile tech comes to your home, office, or wherever your vehicle is parked.
