ADAS Calibration After Windshield Replacement: What It Is and Why It Matters

Your windshield does more than block the wind.

If your vehicle was manufactured after 2018, chances are it has at least one camera mounted behind the windshield. That camera is the eye of your Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — or ADAS — and it needs to be precisely calibrated to work correctly.

What Is ADAS?

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems is an umbrella term for the safety features now standard on most new vehicles:

  • Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Pedestrian detection

These systems rely on cameras, radar sensors, and precise geometry to function correctly. The windshield-mounted camera in particular has to be aimed at a very specific angle relative to the road surface.

What Happens If You Don't Calibrate?

If ADAS isn't recalibrated after windshield replacement, the system may:

  • Fail to detect vehicles, pedestrians, or lane markers correctly
  • Trigger false alerts or brake unexpectedly
  • Disable safety features entirely and throw a dashboard warning
  • In rare cases, cause accidents by misjudging distance or lane position

Static vs. Dynamic Calibration

There are two types of ADAS calibration. Static calibration is performed in a controlled shop environment. The vehicle is positioned in front of a calibration target and the system is adjusted using specialized equipment. This is A1's preferred method — precise, consistent, and documented.

Dynamic calibration requires driving the vehicle at a set speed on a road with clear lane markings while the system self-calibrates. Some vehicles require both.

A1 Auto Glass is equipped to perform both types of calibration for most vehicle makes and models.

Which Vehicles Require It?

Most modern vehicles with ADAS require calibration after windshield replacement, including:

  • Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X
  • Toyota / Lexus with Toyota Safety Sense
  • Honda / Acura with Honda Sensing
  • Ford, Chevrolet, RAM trucks with factory safety packages
  • Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, and most European vehicles

OEM vs. Aftermarket Glass

For vehicles with ADAS, we strongly recommend OEM or OEM-equivalent glass. Aftermarket windshields may have optical variations that affect camera performance even after calibration. A1 Auto Glass stocks OEM and OEM-equivalent glass for most makes and models.

If your car has ADAS and you need a windshield replacement, calibration isn't optional — it's part of the job. Call us at (619) 444-4004 or visit either El Cajon location. Schedule service online.
